Camp 8

For the first time, Pax and his crew arrived with the expedition’s caravan to the new site of Camp 8. Once they gave Windhelm their heartfelt thanks and reluctantly left his luxurious carriage, various officials shuffled them off to an area out of the way. In an explosion of activity, laborers, crafters and mages laid the foundation of the new camp, walls and streets first.

“Wow,” Dahni said, eyes wide as he watched what powerful earth mages could accomplish. “That’s going to be me someday.”

“Yeah.” Amil shot him a grin. “You could pop an earth fort out of the ground for our fights with slits for us to fire out of. Imagine how overpowered that would be.”

“Stone would be better,” Tyrodon said, his eyes out of focus as he obviously considered the possibilities.

“Hate to pop your bubble, but what about monsters with earth powers that can stomp it or dig up from underneath? Maintaining something like this takes constant attention and maintenance once beasts are focused on tearing it down.” Rin gave them a shrug. “Or what about the loxotine? Dirt or even stone wouldn’t stand up to that.”

While Amil looked crestfallen, Tyrodon moved on to other ideas, mumbling something about moveable forts and floating platforms. Pax left him to it, because he really wanted to discuss what Windhelm had just told them and make plans for the new camp.

With the others crowded around them, waiting for permission to move in, Pax switched over to their Echoes. Do you think Master Windhelm’s plans will get Graybrew off our backs?

Rin gave a harsh laugh. Graybrew might be a fanatic about enforcing the magic rules on behalf of the Amberborns. But if Windhelm can nudge their bottom line and blame Graybrew’s behavior, they won’t be happy at all.

Does Windhelm’s company really supply that much product for the crafting industry? Bryn still sounded incredulous. She’d paid rapt attention once Windhelm explained how many interests he had involved in various Amberborn subsidiaries. She’d been impressed at how a common-born warrior had carved himself out a significant piece of commerce in the empire’s capital.

There’s no reason for him to make all that up. Rin said. Besides, that carriage is enough evidence that he has access to plenty of coin.

So, he lets them know his firm is representing our crew now and would appreciate them leaving us alone if they’d like to continue their current contracts and prices? Bryn still didn’t sound sure it would work. We all know ’crats don’t just cave to pressure.

I guess it depends who is pressuring who, Pax said, after giving it some thought. If this is Graybrew with his pants in a twist about a shirker like me doing really well, I expect he’ll be told to back down.

And if he isn’t? Amil asked.

Then we’ll know that this comes from someone further up the feeding chain with more influence and power, Rin said exactly what Pax was thinking.

And we’ll see how that person stacks up against Windhelm, Pax said, already seeing how it could play out.
